Parts Installation Experience and Driving Impressions

My previous posts here detailed the installation of a whole bunch of new parts for the car. I mostly described the parts themselves, and my reasoning behind why I chose them. Now that I've had them on my car for several weeks, I wanted to come back and give a brief summary of my experience installing these parts, and also share my thoughts on the results with regards to how the car drives now. Installation [...]

Third Oil Change and Blackstone Labs Oil Analysis

By |2017-01-29T17:16:27-06:00March 25th, 2016|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , , |

So this was the oil change I was really looking forward to. As you may or may not know, I run AMSOIL Signature Series oil in this car. AMSOIL claims you can run 25,000 mile intervals between oil changes, or 15,000 mile intervals under severe use. I decided to test their claims, but since I autocross and whatnot, I decided to play it safe and go with a moderate 10,000 mile interval. That is [...]

New Coilovers, Camber Plates, and Lower Control Arms!

By |2017-01-29T02:15:58-06:00March 11th, 2016|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , , , |

I'm back with Part II of my pre-warm-weather upgrades! Now that the wheels and tires were sorted out, it was time to take a look at the suspension, and make a few tweaks :) New Coilovers (KW Suspensions Variant 3) The one other thing that always bugged me about this car in stock form was the "rally-style" ride height. I am in no way the kind of person that wants to slam the car [...]

New Wheels, Tires, and Rock Guards!

By |2017-01-28T23:17:17-06:00March 6th, 2016|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , , , |

It's been awhile since I updated this blog with new developments, but that's because I've been really busy doing nothing this winter in order to save up for some new parts. Here is the first set of parts, and I'll be following this up with another blog post in a few weeks probably when I get around to installing the rest of the parts. Stay tuned! New Shoes (HRE FF15) So the most obvious [...]

The BRZ Visits the Body Shop for a Repair, and a Modification

By |2017-01-28T22:50:47-06:00February 10th, 2016|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , |

Two weeks ago, on the way back from Ice Racing, while driving past a 4-car accident on the highway, the car in the lane next to me hit a piece of... car... that was in their lane, and catapulted it into my passenger-side door. At the time I just heard a thud and didn't think too much of it, but when we pulled over to get gas a few miles down the road, I [...]

GrimmSpeed Hood Struts

By |2017-01-28T18:26:09-06:00December 25th, 2015|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , , |

Christmas came today, and I got a GrimmSpeed Hood Strut Kit for my car. I've been looking into this kit for a while, for a few reasons: It allows the hood to open to a much higher point, which makes working in the engine bay much more pleasant (and allows more light in.) It means the hood is much more secure - especially when working in windy conditions. This is a light hood, and [...]

Tap-Turn Flasher Relay Upgrade!

By |2017-12-20T19:03:50-06:00November 7th, 2015|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , |

Got my new Tap-Turn module installed. I've been wanting one of these for years! It's a replacement for the stock turn signal/hazard relay. It looks really unassuming as it's identical to the OEM relay, but it enables a bunch of cool features using the turn signals. I could needlessly write up a list of all the things it does to make this blog post longer, but instead I'll simply provide this link to the Tap [...]

Lots of New Fluids and Pads (Updated w/ AMSOIL Test Results)

By |2017-01-28T16:55:31-06:00September 5th, 2015|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , , , , |

Today I changed out all of the fluids in the car with the following fluids: Engine Oil: AMSOIL Signature Series (0W-20) Transmission: AMSOIL Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube (75W-90) Differential: AMSOIL Severe Gear (75W-90) Brakes: Motul 600 Dot 4 I was curious what sort of difference the transmission fluid would make to the shifter feel. It basically just feels a bit lighter, and easier to move around. However, a strange issue has now developed, [...]

Baby’s First Oil Change and a Return to Summer Wheels & Tires

By |2017-01-27T23:46:55-06:00March 7th, 2015|Categories: Maintenance/Modifications|Tags: , , , |

One difference between this and my last car (Outback) is that I had to go to Lowes and have them cut up a 2x10 wood board so that I could cheat my way onto my ramps. Otherwise I can't make it. So that's a new experience. I think it is time to invest in some proper tools (a lift and jackstands.) I decided to go with "high-end" AMSOIL Signature Series 0w20 oil, [...]
